Horses and Cattle

Horses and Cattle have been part of the Dorrigo Show since it first began. In the early years cattle were walked to the Showground the day before the Show. With many dairy farms in the district, classes were very large. With the decline of the dairy industry on the Plateau, the number of Cattle now in the show is comparatively smaller. Working dog trials commenced nationally with sheep many years ago.  Kelpies, Kelpie Border Collie cross and pure bred Border Collies have been the most popular breeds for trialling, with competition for both yard and paddock independently. The trials extended to cattle in later years with the dog required to control a pen of generally four or five head from the paddock through a course of gates, through a crush and eventually to the yard, points being awarded for obedience, control and time. Dorrigo commenced dog trials about ten years ago with mainly locals and semi-locals demonstrating some handy dogs.  The event has remained a Bush Dog Trial (not registered or organised under the rules of the Dog Trial Association) and is not registered with the Association. Cork Trust. The Show Society will again be conducting the Bush Dog Trial at the forthcoming Show and entries are invited.  Good prize money is on...
